His previous positions include serving as an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UIC from 1984 to 1989, an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering Departments from 1990 to 1997, and a Professor and Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory from 1997 to 2017. He was also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at UIC from 2001 to 2005 and worked as a Visiting Scientist at V.A. Hospital Hines, IL, from 1996 to 1997.

In 1989, he was an ICOMP Visiting Scientist at NASA Lewis Center. He was awarded the G-7 Summit Fellowship from 1993 to 1994 and the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 1994. Between 1995 and 1997, he received the NATO Collaborative Research Award. In 2003, Prof. Amirouche earned the Faculty Research Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has been serving as the Vice President of Biomint/UNESCO for Micro and Nanotechnology Applications to Medicine since 2003. He was named a Membre Titulaire of the World Academy of Biomedical Technologies, UNESCO, in 2004 and became a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a University of Illinois Scholar Professor in 2005. In 2006, he was honored as a Chevalier of “Palmes AcadĆ©miques” by France and served as a National Academies Advisor for the Keck Futures Initiatives Conference. In 2007, he was a Laureate of the Young Entrepreneur Initiative by the French Government and was an ALP Fellow with the Consortium of 12 Research Universities from 2009 to 2010.
